Distinguished Duo Irmtraud + Edward Tarr

The distinguished organ-trumpet duo of Irmtraud and Edward Tarr (organ and trumpet), known as The Duo, has been performing as a unit since 1980. Both performers are multitalents.

Trumpeter Edward H. Tarr has not only been one of the world's top trumpeters for over 20 years, with over 100 recordings (LPs and CDs), but he is also a respected editor of early music, a master teacher, and - from 1985 to 2004 - the director of a unique European institution, the Bad Säckingen Trumpet Museum.
Edward H. Tarr was born in America, lived for nearly 20 years in Switzerland, and is now residing in Germany. He received the Ph.D. in musicology in 1986 from the University of Hamburg. Tarr taught at the prestigious pioneering institute for research and performance in early music, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, as well as at the Basel Conservatory of Music (Baroque and modern trumpet, respectively) in Switzerland, and is presently teaching at the Karlsruhe Conservatory (Musikhochschule).

Organist Irmtraud Tarr was born in Germany. She has been called "an unusually high-spirited performer" (Berliner Morgenpost). As a concert organist who appears regularly in all the media, her preference is for rarities off the beaten track. She has made many recordings, most of them on historical organs.
Irmtraud Tarr, who received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Hamburg in 1987, is also a psychotherapist and music therapist with her own private practice. She is also the author of many articles and, to date, 31 books, of which Performance Power (Summit Books, Tempe, Arizona 1995) is a best-seller. She is in great demand for seminars on stage fright.

"The Duo", founded in 1980, has played in most of the world's cathedrals and concert halls. Not only do they give definitive readings of Baroque works, but Romantic and modern works also figure heavily in their programs. Their performance of Kamilló Lendvay's Variationi con tema in Osaka in 1986 was the first time a Hungarian work had received a world premiere in Japan.

Both artists are also available for appearances with chamber orchestra.

Irmtraud Tarr se presenta a nivel international como organista de conciertos en toda Europa, Japón y Estados Unidos de N. A. Grabó innumerables discos y grabaciones para la radio y la televisión. Produjo CDs, generalmente en órganos históricos, en Francia, España, Portugal, Italia, Alemania y Letonia. Por sus méritos con referencia a la música española tocará pour primera vez como alemana en el Concierto pera la Fiesta Nacional en la Catedral de Barcelona, en donde al mismo tiempo se efectuará la presentatión de su primer libro en español.

Entre sus múltiples distinciones y premios cabe mencionar la Medalla de Plata al Mérito de la ciudad de Rheinfelden por méritos culturales, así como otras de Baviera y de la República Checa. Su actividad científica abarca la tesis para obtener el Dr. phil. en la Universidad de Hamburgo en 1987 así como la habilitación. Desde el otoño de 2004 trabaja en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Krems (Austria) para la incorporación de una carrera en la materia terapia musical, una institución única en Europa. Es autora de bestsellers que llegaron a la cantidad de 30 libros, los que fueron traducidos a muchos idiomas.

Edward H. Tarr es un pionero de los instrumentos de bronce históricos y actuó en más de cien grabaciones LP y CD. Desde 1968 sus giras de conciertos lo llevan por todo el mundo (EE UU., Japón, Australia, toda Europa inclusive Escandinavia y Rusia y ahora también América del Sur).

Junto a la Medalla de Plata al Mérito de la ciudad de Rheinfelden en reconocimiento a méritos culturales (2003) y el Premio de Música de la Volksbach Hochrhein-Stiftung (1997) obtuvo más distinciones y premios en Nueva York, Londres y Verona.

Edward H. Tarr actualmente es profesor en la Escuela Superior de Música de Karlsruhe. El título de Profesor le fue otorgado allí en febrero de 2004. (Dr. phil., Universidad de Hamburgo en 1986; Dr. mus. h. c., Oberlin College 2003.) Entre 1971 e 2001 formó parte de la Schola Cantorum Basiliensis y entre 1985 y 2004 actuó como Director del Museo de Trompetas de Bad Säckingen. Su libro La trompeta es considerado un clásico.
